University of Georgia Photo Shoot

Today was a special day in that my daughter was able to travel to a photo sessions with me for the first time. She is on spring break, and she was elated at the opportunity to see the Georgia players.

We traveled to Athens, Georgia to photograph five University of Georgia football players — quarterback Joe Cox, receiver A.J. Green, running back Carlton Thomas, defensive back Sanders Commings & linebacker Nick Williams.

Our setup was simple… For our backdrop, we used gray seamless paper. Lighting was all Elinchrom RX units: 2 Ranger RX packs with A heads and 3 600 RX monolights for rim lighting and accents.

Chris Burnett Photo Shoot…

On February 19, 2009, I had the chance to photograph University of Georgia signee Chris Burnett for the cover of DAWG Post magazine. Chris plays for Troupe County High School and  is a US Army All-American, as well as an Academic All-American with a GPA over 5.0.

Chris was an incredible kid that should do very well at the next level. Most importantly, he understands that academics are an important part of his success both on and off the field.

In addition to photographing Chris, I had the opportunity to photograph several juniors that will be D1 recruiting prospects for the 2010 class.

Coach Jeter and coach Martin were a great help and allowed total access to setup for the shots I needed to get. Coach Martin is an amateur photographer and worked as my assistant for the day.

The photo below was selected for the cover of DAWG Post magazine. I will update this post as I get an opportunity to prepare the other photos for the web.

Setup for this shot was fairly simple and required the following equipment…

(3) Elinchrom Ranger units (2 behind Chris with 40º grids pointed at an angle towards Chris; another camera Ranger was placed to right of the camera with a large Elinchrom Rotalux softbox as the key).
(1) Nikon SB 900 set to SU mode and fired into a silver reflector on the floor for fill.
(1) Nikon D3 with a 70-200 VR lens attached, tethered to my MacBook Pro.

DAWG Post: Reshad Jones Photo Shoot Edits…

Introduction…

I wanted to take time to share a few photos that I recently had time to edit. In January of this year, I made a shift from my full-time position as the manager of photography and graphic design with the Atlanta Braves to a full-time freelance photographer. The shift has been a bit overwhelming, but one that I am looking forward to. I have always has an interest in architectural, catalog and portrait photography, and this move will enable me to focus my efforts on such.

In addition to my photographic work, I have partnered with Critical Axiom and will be providing Digital Asset Management (DAM) solutions and consulting for teams and other organizations similar to those I developed while working as the team photographer for the Atlanta Braves and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Reshad Jones photo session…

The photos below are from a last-minute photo session that I did of University of Georgia safety Reshad Jones for DAWG Post Magazine – it took place during August of 2008 and was for the cover of the September issue. The setup for this shoot was a simple two light setup, as it was all we had time to setup — 2 Elinchrom 600RX units, an Elinchrom large softbox and a 20º grid spot with a red gel on a gray paper backdrop. Ideally, I would have used two additional lights as rim lights to add highlights to the outer edges of Reshad’s body and neck, but we only had 15 minutes to setup this shoot. Time was of the essence, and we had to roll with what we had. Reshad was a great sport and very easy to work with.

The image below was shot with the same two lights as the image above, only the second light was used as a rim light instead of illuminating the background.

Both images were shot in RAW format on a Canon 1D Mark III with a Canon 70-200 IS lens attached and tethered to an Apple Mac Book Pro. Tethered images were viewed in Photo Mechanic, tagged, and selected for editing via Adobe Raw Converter. Following initial edits, both images were retouched in Adobe Photoshop and saved.
